Bike Touring the Murray River - Wemen to Swan Hill

14 Jan 2024

I woke up feeling really refreshed in comparison to the previous morning. Today is another hot day, but not as bad as the last two. As I started riding, I realised my front tyre was flat! I was worried I’d gotten a puncture but I tested it out first with pumping it up again to see if it stayed inflated. And it did! So phew, good thing I didn’t have to change my tube because then I could have potentially missed the bus.

I rode 20kms to Annuello and waited for the bus. When it came I asked if I could get my bike on, and they had plenty of space left in the luggage hold to fit it in, so I got on the bus to Swan Hill. Technically bikes aren’t allowed on this bus route, like most v-line coaches, but actually they just aren’t given priority and it is up to the driver’s discretion. I have definitely heard many times that people have gotten bikes onto various v-line coaches, but you need to have a backup plan in case they don’t let you on. Very happy to miss this more boring highway ride, though the ride between Wood Wood and Swan Hill looks nice with a couple of state parks. But I believe it will be similar to Gunbower National Park, so I'm ok with missing it.

Jets of water with laser lights projected on them, so that the sheet of water created looks like a screen with an image of a rabbit and trees projected onto it. It is blurry as the water is moving while the picture was taken.
Swan Hill Pioneer Village light show

I needed to stay in a caravan park to recharge my power bank, so I set that up and went off to explore a bit of Swan Hill. I enjoyed the art gallery and the little walking trail next to the river. I saw there was a night laser light show with stories of the Murray at the Pioneer Village so I went to that, and it was AMAZING. Very impressive, definitely one of the best shows I’ve seen and I highly recommend anyone near Swan Hill go see it.

I felt way more energised today after a good sleep and being in an air conditioned bus for a few hours and having a more chill day to explore. So now I am feeling like going all the way to Wodonga. But I'll see what my vibe is when I get to Echuca.
