Bike Touring the Murray River - Overland Corner to Berri

6 Jan 2024

A bright red sunrise in a cloudy sky, with the silhouette of a tree in the foreground.

I finally had a proper night's sleep last night, but of course not enough to catch up on the lack of sleep of previous nights. I cruised to Lake Bonney on the highway and was only passed a couple of times, then turned to go to Barmera on the road that hugs the lake. Lake Bonney was beautiful, definitely recommend going that way.

A big lake with a sandy shore. It is mostly cloudy.

I had a quick break in Barmera and assessed the cloud situation. I decided the sky still looked ok so I continued to Berri. Halfway there the sky started rapidly changing and I saw this dark mass of clouds appear and start coming closer, I started pedalling faster to make sure I got to Berri before the storm. I had ended up taking a different route to what I had planned, so I used google maps for the first time on this trip. And I noticed it said the timezone of my arrival time. Which made me realise... I've been operating on Melbourne time for the last week, but South Australia is half an hour behind! Suddenly, places being open or closed when I didn't expect them to be made sense. Which also explains why the sun is not up at the 'sunrise' time on my weather app... and I've actually been waking up at 4:30 instead of 5! Well.

A few minutes after I got to town I heard the first thunder. I got some breakfast at the Berri Bakehouse and when I walked outside again it was pouring and thundering HARD. I stopped at just the right time. I booked at the Berri Hotel for tonight and tomorrow, my rest day. It was 10am so I had to wait around for a few hours to be able to check into the hotel. I texted some friends and called my mum to pass the time. Once checked into my room with a great view of the river, I just ate food and vegged out watching YouTube for the rest of the day. It felt nice to be in a cool room after the last few hot days!
