Bike Touring the Murray River - Goolwa to Murray Bridge

Updated: Jun 25, 2024

A T-intersection on a country highway, with views that stretch far into the distance of grassy plains, and eventually hills. It is sunny and partly cloudy.

Really flat day today, and the rest of the trip is going to be flat and easy, really. I rode to Milang, got a nice beef, bacon, and cheese pie from their bakery and one of those iced breads. I felt pretty good so I decided here to go all the way to Murray Bridge today, which makes it a 90km day. I booked in at Murray Bridge Marina Caravan Park.

Two lakes next to each other in a field, the left one is pink and the right one is blue.

There was one little bit of highway before the turn off to Murray Bridge, Wellington Rd. There is a main turn off to Murray Bridge on Brinkley Rd and I was tempted to take it since it would be a little shorter than the side road, but after looking at it for a bit, I decided it would probably be more pleasant to ride Flagstaff road instead, especially since it was also sealed. I got passed by just one car in the 20 something kms so I think it was the right choice! This section is so flat you can see for ages into the distance and it had some great views, including a pink lake!

A pink milkshake in a clear cup. My road bike leans against a pole on the footpath behind it.
The Steamers Cafe

I decided that this caravan park would be a good spot to have a rest day to easily do some laundry so today is my rest day. I went out to town for lunch and had a parma and the most perfectly cooked, chicken-salted chips, and a milkshake, at the Steamers cafe in town. All of it was really very good, highly recommend that cafe.

Underneath a bridge that is crossing the river in front of the camera. The bank on this side of the river is a dirt walking track.
The first bridge to cross the Murray River

I walked around a bit and had a look at the first bridge built across the Murray and the river views, then stocked up on some food.

Tomorrow has a high of 29 degrees, but the rest of the week is a toasty mid-30s, since I'm going further North, so I'm going to ride as far as I can tomorrow and hopefully do at least 100km.
