Today it actually didn't rain at all, I think the storm finished passing through this area. But you never know how it'll go, the weather is a fickle mistress. For my rest day I mostly stayed in my room and napped, and the only thing I went out for was to go to the Berri lookout tower and to stock up on food. I also spent some time planning how to get to Mildura/Red Cliffs from Renmark.
So I originally planned to take Old Mail Rd, but thought maybe I'll just double check exactly what 'unsealed' means in this case. I called the Renmark Visitor Information Centre, and they told me it was renowned for being sandy, so it probably wouldn't be the best option for my cx bike. It also would probably be very muddy after the storm yesterday. The other unsealed option, north of the river into Wentworth, had its New South Wales portion closed off because of the storm damage. So the only option left is the Sturt Highway...
I really dislike the highways, especially this one since it will have road trains. They told me at least some parts will have a sealed shoulder, so hopefully some of it will be nice. It also means I won't see the river again for two days until I get to Red Cliffs. Basically, from Paringa I will take the highway for 60kms until Meringur North, then turn off onto Meringur Red Cliffs Rd for the rest of the way until Red Cliffs. this is a sealed road as well, but there should be much less traffic.
