We left our gear at the campsite and started the day with breakfast at the Tallangatta Bakery. Jeremy and I agreed that this bakery is a bit hit and miss.
We rode to about 5kms before Shelley station. The surface today was rougher, but nothing my 30mm cx tyres couldn't handle. It also didn't rain while we rode today! I barely noticed the beginning of the incline until I came across a plaque that showed where we were on the trail, and then realised 'oh yeah the last half an hour has felt a little slow'. I got a bit worried about getting back in time for dinner places to still be open in Tallangatta and wanted to avoid riding in the dark, so we stopped at 2:30pm to have some food before turning back. On the way up we also spoke to another, faster cyclist who told us that past the last bridge that had a nice view, there was nothing worth the ride except our pride. So we weren't upset about missing the last little bit.
The way down was very fun, though opening and closing all the cattle gates did get a little more annoying on the way down since we would get in such a good flow. But it was necessary since it passed through so many properties. The views were great all day, but I think they were a bit better in this direction. Overall, very impressed with the mountain views on this trail. There was a bit of a shower for about 10 minutes towards the end of the descent but otherwise we stayed dry. We had to turn lights on for the last 6kms back and darkness fully fell as we got into the town to have dinner at the pub. The food there was good, though they didn't give us warning that it would be a 45 minute wait which wasn't ideal, after a full day of riding.
