Last night I was woken up by a possum screaming at 3am. Not sure why it was screaming but I did not appreciate the interruption of my sleep. I got a bit worried when I heard it that perhaps it got a whiff of my food and so I stayed awake for half an hour listening out and occasionally flashing my torch around outside my tent. But luckily it did not attempt to eat my food.
I was a bit sad to leave Bruny Island as I had had a wonderful time, and also was cutting it short. But I have decided to come back one day with my friend Liz and see even more, but by car so we don't have to deal with feeling unsafe on the road. So I am looking forward to coming back!
The ride back to the ferry was very picturesque and not too difficult, though I walked the final two ascents. On the way I stopped at Bruny Island Honey and sampled some honeys, I especially liked the Leatherwood Honey! I looked around for anything else I might want to buy and noticed that there were a lot of Leatherwood Honey flavoured things, so that one is clearly popular. I got a little pot of that honey to smash through on my rest day, some leatherwood honey shortbread, and bee earrings for when I'm home.
I also stopped at the Bruny Island Cheese and Beer Co for a cheese platter. This spot was very busy, and is a cheese shop, bakery cafe, and brewery all in one. They even use milk from their own cows for people's coffees. Unfortunately the menu is scant on details for individual items so everyone in line had to ask lots of questions while ordering, which I'm sure is equally annoying for both the customer and the servers.
My cheese platter came with 3 cheeses and some bread baked in-house. I couldn't have the condiments as they were full of onion and I unfortunately have a low tolerance for FODMAPs. The cheese was really nice, and went well with the bread. The platter is usually meant for 2 people, so I didn't quite finish it in one go. I wrapped up the one hard cheese and the rest of the bread to have later for dinner before heading on to the ferry.
Next to the ferry they were selling some fairly expensive cherries but I thought what the heck let's try these island cherries. Can confirm they were very good, would probably buy them again next time. The ferry back once again had great views. I got on the highway towards Hobart behind the ferry load of cars thinking it might mean I got passed less but it didn't make a difference. I had an even worse time on this highway the second time, I think I may have been a little overexposed to being passed close by cars, I felt much more sensitive to it.
I arrived in Snug at 5pm, got some more chafing cream and sunscreen, and went to the snug as a bug caravan park. I felt like I had mostly eaten carbs and a little cheese that day, so I finished the day with a dinner of tuna, nuts, finishing off the cheese and bread, and a protein bar. I had my first shower in 4 days, and I gave my jersey a rinse to make it a bit less offensive before being able to give it a proper wash tomorrow. The water turned almost black within 10 seconds!
